Gotham typeface fontsteady2/17/2024 In her campaign, Hillary Clinton used New Baskerville, a serif used by book publishers, law firms, and universities, while John McCain used Optima, the same font used for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Observers of the primary and general elections compared Obama's design choices favorably to those made by his opponents. It has the sense of trustworthiness because you've seen it everywhere." Graphic designer Brian Collins noted that Gotham was the "linchpin" to Obama's entire campaign imagery. The International Herald Tribune praised the choice for its "potent, if unspoken, combination of contemporary sophistication (a nod to his suits) with nostalgia for America's past and a sense of duty." John Berry, an author of books on typography, agreed: "It's funny to see it used in a political campaign because on the one hand it's almost too ordinary yet that's the point. Later, however, upon hiring John Slabyk, and Scott Thomas, the campaign made the change to Gotham, and the font was used on numerous signs and posters for the campaign. The text is written in all-uppercase letters, which was criticized, as some wanted a mix of upper and lower-case to "give the words a human voice." In the Obama campaignĮarly materials for the Obama campaign used the serif Perpetua. In a Fourth of July speech at its unveiling, then-Governor George Pataki cited the cornerstone as the "bedrock of our state". Gotham was prominently featured in 2004 as the typeface on the cornerstone for the Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site, itself owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also owns the bus terminal that inspired the typeface. I didn't think anything new could have been found there, but luckily for me (and the client), I was mistaken." On the Freedom Tower had already been thoroughly staked out and developed by past designers. "It's very American."Īccording to Frere-Jones, Gotham wouldn't have happened without the GQ commission. "Unlike other sans serif typefaces, it's not German, it's not French, it's not Swiss," he said. According to David Dunlap of The New York Times, Gotham "deliberately evokes the blocky no-nonsense, unselfconscious architectural lettering that dominated the streetscape from the 1930s through the 1960s." Andrew Romano of Newsweek concurs. Reviews of Gotham focus on its identity as something both American and specific to New York City. It was born outside the type design in some other world and has a very distinct flavor from that." It's the kind of letter an engineer would make. This simplification of type is characterized by Frere-Jones as "not the kind of letter a type designer would make. The lettering that inspired this typeface originated from the style of 1920s era sans-serifs like Futura, where "Type, like architecture, like the organization of society itself, was to be reduced to its bare, efficient essentials, rid of undesirable, local or ethnic elements." This theme was found frequently in Depression-era type in both North America and Europe, particularly Germany. It is also the current font to be used in title cards for film trailers in the US.ĭeveloped for professional use, Gotham is an extremely large family, featuring four widths, eight weights, and separate designs for screen display. The font has also been used as the cornerstone of the One World Trade Center, the tower built on the site of the former World Trade Center in New York. Since creation, Gotham has been highly visible due to its appearance in many notable places, including a large amount of campaign material created for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, and the 2016 federal election campaign of the Australian Labor Party. Gotham has a relatively broad design with a reasonably high x-height and wide apertures. Gotham's letterforms are inspired by a form of architectural signage that achieved popularity in the mid-twentieth century, and are especially popular throughout New York City. Gotham is a family of widely used geometric sans-serif digital typefaces designed by American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000. Barney rebel2/17/2024 In the first episode of the original series he was an inventor of a hand-powered helicopter. He is also a talented pianist and drummer. He, like Fred, was also a member of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos lodge and its predecessor in earlier episodes, the Loyal Order of Dinosaurs. He also wears a brown loincloth with a black letter X-shaped shoelace on the top.īarney's interests included bowling, playing pool, poker, tinkering around in Fred's garage and playing golf (though there were episodes where Barney did not know how to play golf). He cries, however, after saying, "I hate to see a grown man cry," or "Oh gee, if there's one thing I can't stand is to see a grown man cry."īarney is a short and diminutive caveman with fair skin, yellow hair, thick black eyebrows and eyes that are depicted as two ovals or (occasionally) circles and shown only as dark circular outlines in the first through fifth seasons and later with black, very similar to Wilma's eyes in the sixth and final season of the original series. Fred is often annoyed by Barney's inveterate cheerfulness, but he does truly care for him.īarney is not as emotional as the other characters including Fred, and rarely cries. He changes his mind after Fred apologizes. The best example comes in " I Yabba-Dabba Do!": after losing his patience with Fred for ruining Pebbles's and Bamm-Bamm's wedding, Barney decides to leave Bedrock. Also, he is fatherly to his adopted son, Bamm-Bamm.Īlthough Fred and Barney are best friends, Barney loses his patience with Fred occasionally. Barney is brave, annoying (sometimes), immature, respectful, noble, encouraging, judicious, responsible, understanding, big-hearted, benevolent, loving and extroverted. He is very caring and devoted to his wife Betty as he never wanted to be romantically involved with another woman. whatever you say, Fred!"īarney is more jovial, easygoing and good-natured than Fred is, though he often plays funny little insult jokes on his best friend. Usually, after Fred had hatched one of his plans, Barney showed his agreement by laughing and saying, "uh hee hee hee. Like Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners, Fred was constantly on the lookout for get-rich-quick schemes, while Barney, like Norton, found life satisfactory as it was, but participated in said schemes because Fred was his friend. The Flintstones character was based on the character Ed Norton ( Art Carney) from The Honeymoonersīarney in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.īarney's personality was based on that of Ed Norton on the 1950s television series The Honeymooners, played by Art Carney. His best friend is his next door neighbor, Fred. This handsome adult gentleman is married to Betty Rubble, with whom they adopted their son, Bamm-Bamm Rubble. 6.1 Television shows, films and specials.I’m sure the people at Hanna-Barbera are suitably chastened and won’t let it happen again. A little disconcerting, especially for hard-core Flintstones viewers, whose grip on reality has to be pretty shaky to start with. Once his company was called the Slate Rock and Gravel Company and another time Bedrock Quarry and Gravel. Slate’s first name was George and in another it was Sam. The problem with settling questions like this is that TV continuity ain’t what it could be. In one episode he was even made Fred’s boss by Mr. In later years Barney settled into a more comfortable existence working with Fred at the quarry. They don’t recall him being a short-order cook but admit it’s possible. The folks at Hanna-Barbera, the studio that created the series, say Barney was a TV repossessor in one episode and a geological engineer in another - not your typical white-collar career path, but hey, it’s the cartoons. Where else would I get the chance to be on the front lines of journalism, tracking down the questions all America is buzzing about? Actually, Barney’s occupation was left up in the air in the early years of the series, which ran 166 episodes from 1960 through 1966. In the TV series The Flintstones, what was Barney Rubble’s job? We all know that Fred worked at the quarry, but Barney’s job was never directly referred to, except in a couple episodes where he worked as a TV repossessor or a short-order chef, after having been fired from his regular (unknown) job. Benefits of reflective listening2/17/2024 Out of a total of about 7,500 articles we considered, only 14% were related to listening! 25% were about speaking, while both the written skills have received more than double as much attention as listening has – a little like Cinderella’s evil stepsisters did in the story (and yes, we’re deliberately keeping with the Cinderella analogy to delight you). Our analysis is based on 5 Google Scholar searches, looking up each skill together with the terms EFL, ESL, ELT, language teaching and language learning. We’ve run the numbers to see how much the macro-skill of listening has been studied by researchers compared to reading, writing and speaking. how much attention we give it in our classrooms.how much listening has been studied by researchers. To answer this question, we can look at two key variables: How listening pedagogy can be improved (tips and tools).Whether listening can be called the Cinderella skill. So, is it true that listening is the Cinderella skill? And does it matter to our teaching? In this blog post, we’re going to discuss: The issue has attracted more and more attention in recent years – very recently so in Italy, where it featured in the latest national exam for English language teachers. They say that just like Cinderella in the famous tale, listening is neglected, taken for granted and overlooked by its step-sister, speaking, which is given greater importance in research and in classrooms. It worked.Researchers have described listening as the “Cinderella” of the four skills in language education. Just let me prove that here, in the first five minutes.’ I would even interrupt people and tell them what they were going to tell me, to save us time so that we could get to the really important stuff, which was me telling them what to do. He recalls, “My approach was: ‘I’m the smartest guy in the room. Kevin adopted that style, which came naturally to him and allowed him to rise rapidly on the career ladder. His colleagues were confident, employed a command-and-control style of leadership, and made their expectations clear. Up until then, all Kevin’s key professional influences-in the U.S. In 1992 one of us (Kevin) joined Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology company, as its president and chief operating officer. Becoming better listeners, in short, allows them to do their jobs better. When leaders listen in focused, attentive, and systematic ways, they can pick up on early signs of danger, head off potential crises, and recognize glimmers of opportunity. To break out of their information bubbles, leaders need to create better “listening ecosystems.” They must listen without distraction or judgment-purely for comprehension-and create systems and processes that elevate listening to a state of hypervigilance. Warning signals are tamped down, key facts are omitted, and data sets are given a positive spin. Senior leaders confront a paradox: They have access to more lines of communication than anybody else has, but the information they get is suspect and compromised. The authors conclude this piece by sharing advice-gleaned from interviews and personal experience-about how leaders can learn to listen better. This sort of sustained attention to listening allows leaders to pick up on early signs of both danger and opportunity-and that, in turn, allows them to do their jobs and serve their organizations better. All of it isolates leaders in a dangerous information bubble.īut they can escape that bubble, the authors argue, by working actively to create a more expansive “listening ecosystem.” They first have to learn how to listen actively themselves, without distraction or judgment, purely for comprehension then they have to create systems and processes all around them that elevate listening to a constant state of hypervigilance. Senior leaders, particularly CEOs, confront a central paradox in their work: They generally have access to more lines of communication than anybody else, but the information that flows to them is suspect and compromised. With this article on REC TEQ grills, I’ve found two pretty good owner-review videos on the RT-700 and the BFG. When I write these analysis articles on the features of various makes and models of pellet grills, I like to search for a couple of owner reviews to add in as well. I’ve not done a proper analysis of the REC TEQ app features as yet as I did for the Traeger WiFire vs Camp Chef Connect, but I might get around to that at some point. With Bluetooth, you’re limited to controlling the grill within your yard and maybe from inside your house (if you’re lucky). With a WiFi control panel properly hooked up to your home’s WiFi router and a 4G/5G signal on your phone, you can control the grill from pretty much anywhere. As Ray/Ron stated in their video above, WiFi is superior to Bluetooth, which is found on some pellet grills ( Cuisinart/ Pit Boss). Quick overview of the REC TEQ PID/WiFi control panel.Īll of the REC TEQ pellet grills (except the Bullseye) also come with WiFi integration. The REC TEQ PID ‘Smart Grill Technology™’ offers a temperature range between 225-749 degrees. The REC TEQ Bullseye provides 380 square inches of cooking space, sufficient for around 25 burgers (at a push). Further down in this article, I’ll discuss the benefits of PID control panels. However, this latest version of the REC TEQ Bullseye features a PID control panel. It was simply a variable speed dial for the pellet feed auger motor. Furthermore, the control panel on the first version of the Bullseye wasn’t really a control panel in the traditional sense at all. When I first started doing my research before writing this post on REC TEQ pellet grills, the Bullseye was very different to the version you can see in the video above.įor instance, it didn’t feature a stainless steel body/lid, which the current version does and is a welcome improvement. The Bullseye is more intended to be a small grill/smoker that sits on your porch/patio and can be used to cook up a small BBQ for a couple of people at a time.Ī look at the features of the upgraded REC TEQ Bullseye by the YouTube channel StokedonSmoke Though the Bullseye is not really designed as a portable/tailgating grill, the slightly larger RT-340 discussed below is more suited for that use. Its actually smaller than most portable pellet grills. In fact, this is one of the smallest/most lightweight pellet grills on the market today. The Bullseye (also known as RT-B380) is REC TEQs smallest pellet grill. REC TEQ RT-B380 Bullseye Pellet Grill/Smoker While the Bullseye does now feature a PID control panel just like all the other REC TEQ grills, it does not currently feature WiFi like all the other REC TEQ pellet grills. However, since the above video was made, REC TEQ has redesigned the Bullseye, which we’ll look at below. In the video above, its stated that the REC TEQ Bullseye doesn’t feature a PID controller (I’ll discuss what that actually means later). With the REC TEC Beast and Chuckwagon (a trailer-mounted Beast), those pellet grills are $8-10K, respectively to meet the needs of the commercial sector/catering industries.Īlternatively, below is a video from the founders of REC TEQ, Ron and Ray, on how they started the brand formally known as REC TEC.Ī few of the reasons why REC TEQ (formally REC TEC) feels they produce the best pellet grills on the market Are they trying to offer the most affordable products they can, or are they trying to produce something of a higher quality that’s more expensive? I feel REC TEQ is trying to hit quite a broad range of potential customers.Īfter all, within their range, they have pellet grills under $500, under $1,000, and under $2,000. I think it helps you to appreciate what a particular brand is focused on. Ps5 spider man remastered2/16/2024 This makes sense, as there are people, cars and other objects all being rendered, and that makes performance take a hit. I also noticed that frame rates dropped when you’re closer to the ground. In the outside world, where frame rates were choppier, the fights didn’t flow as well, which was a shame. The smoother frame rates in these levels also benefitted the game’s combat, which relies on timing and smooth combos for fluid hand-to-hand fights, and these felt particularly good. These levels allow for more graphical details and better performance, with environmental details such as reflections looking particularly good on the Steam Deck’s screen. As well as the huge open-world, there are levels that take place in enclosed spaces, such as Fisk Tower, the HQ of Kingpin. Whilst the occasional frame rate drops while swinging around New York was slightly distracting, it was still a thrill to play the game on the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck also became noticeably hot to touch around the exhaust fans (though this did not impact how comfortable it felt to hold). The effort it takes for the plucky Steam Deck to play Spider-Man Remastered also quickly became clear as the fans leapt into action, and became increasingly noisy. This is great to see, and leads to a much more smooth experience. However, after a recent patch, it looks like the open-world performance has been improved a lot, with it hovering around the 40fps mark, with dips to the low 30s, but never below. While it doesn’t dip too far, going down to around 27fps, it does mean that it doesn’t always feel particularly smooth. This is a very ambitious game, and that does result in some noticeable dips in frame rate while swinging around. It's a great example of how powerful the Steam Deck is, and it’s the kind of game that many of us have been dreaming of playing on a handheld console for years. While the visuals don’t hit the same highs as if you were playing on a PS5 or PC (or even a PS4), the fact that I’m playing such a visually-ambitious game with a large open-world on a handheld device really is exciting, and for the most part, swinging travelling around the game’s recreation of New York is just as fun as when played on PC or console. The cut scenes in particular look fantastic, and the smaller screen means that the relatively low resolution still looks good.Īs soon as the first cut scene is over, you get to control Spider-Man has he swings through New York, and it’s here that things get really impressive. You are missing out on the benefit of having faster and smoother gameplay that Spider-Man Remastered gets on PS5 and PC (which has unlocked frame rates), but the PS4 original played at 30fps.įirst impressions with Spider-Man Remastered on Steam Deck are very positive. While 30fps may not seem like much for PC gamers used to higher frame rates, it’s again a decent compromise which should make playing on the Steam Deck more enjoyable, and help prolong the battery life. By aiming for 30 frames a second, FSR will alter how much it upscales to keep the frame rate as close to 30fps as possible. With the Steam Deck running on AMD hardware, it can only use FSR – which is perfectly fine. Spider-Man Remastered on PC also supports Nvidia’s similar DLSS technology – but that’s only available for Nvidia’s RTX line up GPUs. By default, it is set here to target 30 frames per second. The graphics preset is set to ‘Medium’, which again strikes a decent balance between visual fidelity and performance, and it also uses AMD’s FSR 2.0 ( FidelityFX Super Resolution), a useful tool that upscales graphics from lower resolutions in a way that makes it look similar to if it was running at a higher resolution, which can improve performance quite dramatically. This is the native resolution of the Steam Deck’s 7-inch screen, and for the size of the display, games look good at this resolution – and it has the added benefit of not being as taxing on the graphics hardware as 1080p or higher resolutions are. Games that aren’t verified for Steam Deck may still run, but you’ll need to fiddle around with the settings for the best experience.Īt default settings, Spider-Man Remastered on the Steam Deck runs at 1280 x 800. This is because Steam Deck verified games have default settings that should give you the best experience on the handheld. You can even use Boolean searches on other searchable sites, like LinkedIn and Facebook. Most recruiters use Boolean to find more candidates on LinkedIn and other “social” places but you can often find the same amount or more candidates by searching traditional job board CV/ Resumé databases using the same techniques. Once you learn how to use Boolean, you’ll find out that you can discover practically anyone, anywhere. “These operators tell the search engine how to use the keywords in the search.” When used in certain ways, keywords and operators can help you get the most relevant results for your specific searches. Boolean is a word used to define the process of combining certain keywords with “operators,” words like AND, OR, and NOT. When using search engines, you must know how to “speak their language,” which is Boolean. For example, you may think, “I am searching for a candidate who is a website designer OR developer but NOT a graphic designer.” Our brain naturally thinks that most outcomes can be arrived at through a series of logical choices. What is Boolean Search?īack in 1847, George Boole, an English Mathematician, discovered a new algebraic method based on values that were either true or false. Using different keywords and search strings delivers different results. It helps to narrow down search results for complex searches through a method called Boolean search. This is where Google’s advanced search comes in handy. There is no way that you can easily sift through all those results to find exactly what you’re looking for. You could get lost in a sea of millions (or billions) of resumes and search results. Well, it’s not so easy when you’re trying to find candidates with specific requirements. All you do is type in what you’re searching for and click search. You may be thinking, “I know how to use Google. Yes, Google can help you find countless resumes and expand your talent pools by miles, but do you really know how to use this huge, powerful search engine for precise recruiting?
